Guilin is translated from the Chinese language as “Cassia Tree Forest”. The appearance of limestone pillars actually resembles a huge stone forest.
The layers of limestone forming the rocks deposited on the bottom of an ancient sea. Several million years later that part of the earth crust rose after severe earthquakes. Later, heavy rains and snow fell on the area gradually washing away the rock already weakened by cracks and faults. Then, the upper layers of limestone broke away revealing the spiry limestone columns, which are examples of karst rocks of ancient origin for modern scientists. Presently, the limestone columns of Chinese mountains spread from the southern regions of Central China to the northern regions of Vietnam. The shear cliffs, some of which are as high as 100 m, stand almost vertically close to one another. The upright Guilin peaks are seen from the distance of many kilometers.
It seems that nothing can grow on the bare rock. However, Guilin mountains are ones of the most spectacular places on the planet. Almost the entire mountain range is covered with lianas and small trees scrambling over the rocky slopes. Colorful spots of flowers light up on the slopes in the season of blooming of orchids. The mountains often covered with soft mist and calm waters of the Li river have mystic aura for many centuries inspiring artists and poets.
